This Week\u2019s Featured Ink: Monteverde Gila Monster<\/h2>\n

Gila Monster is best described as a deep desert orange<\/strong>. Plain old \u201corange\u201d doesn\u2019t quite cover it.<\/p>\n

Heavier strokes bring out darker areas in Gila Monster\u2019s burnt-orange color.<\/p><\/div>\n

Depending on how much ink reaches the paper, it can read as red-orange, burnt orange, dark terracotta, or rusty desert orange. The larger swatch shows that range especially well: some areas look warmer and brighter, while heavier deposits deepen considerably.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t a bright citrus orange. Its darker areas add contrast to the writing, and its red undertones give the color an earthy feel. The product description also identifies a subtle black sheen, which is a supporting detail rather than the main event.<\/p>\n

Monteverde Gila Monster Ink Review: Ink Test Results<\/h2>\n

We tested Gila Monster with a J. Herbin glass dip pen<\/strong>, which wrote a line roughly comparable to a medium nib, on Rhodia lined paper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ink flowed wetly and put plenty of color on the page. It showed dark shading, dried in approximately 10 seconds, and produced clean lines without feathering or bleed-through during normal writing on our Rhodia test paper.<\/p>\n

Ink Bottle and Packaging<\/h2>\n

Gila Monster comes in a small, sturdy square glass bottle<\/strong> with a screw-on cap and a themed exterior label.<\/p>\n

The bottle\u2019s generously sized opening made the ink easy to access with our glass dip pen. The cap screwed on easily, too. Those are simple details, but they make a difference when you\u2019re reaching for an ink you actually plan to use.<\/p>\n

At 30ml, the bottle is compact while still holding enough ink for repeated fills, swatches, and writing sessions.<\/p>\n

Other Products Used During the Review<\/h2>\n

J. Herbin glass dip pen:<\/strong> This pen gave us a line roughly comparable to a medium fountain pen nib and let us observe the ink\u2019s color, flow, and shading.<\/p>\n

Rhodia lined paper:<\/strong> We used it to evaluate the ink\u2019s writing appearance, dry time, feathering, bleed-through, and water response.<\/p>\n

1-Dip Test<\/h2>\n

With one dip<\/strong>, the glass pen wrote all three test lines and still had plenty of ink left afterward.<\/p>\n

A glass dip pen holds ink differently from a fountain pen feed, so this test doesn\u2019t predict how far a fountain pen fill will go. It does show that Gila Monster had no trouble keeping up with our three-line writing test.<\/p>\n

Dry Time: How Fast Did the Ink Dry?<\/h2>\n

Our review sheet records the dry time and three lines written with one dip.<\/p><\/div>\n

Gila Monster dried in approximately 10 seconds<\/strong> on Rhodia paper in our test.<\/p>\n

That was a manageable result for an ink that laid down such a wet, richly colored line. A broader or wetter nib could take longer to dry, while a finer nib or more absorbent paper could produce a different result.<\/p>\n

Water Test: Is Gila Monster Water Resistant?<\/h2>\n

Gila Monster is not waterproof<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When we applied water, the ink ran, and the writing showed visible line distortion and feathering. Some lines became much lighter or disappeared where the ink moved.<\/p>\n

Water caused Gila Monster\u2019s lines to spread and fade, though parts remained visible.<\/p><\/div>\n

The writing remained somewhat visible; the water test wasn\u2019t a complete washout. We also saw no bleed-through<\/strong> to the back of the Rhodia paper. Still, if water resistance is essential for a particular page, this would not be the ink we\u2019d choose for that job.<\/p>\n

Special Properties: Shading, Sheen, and Shimmer<\/h2>\n

Shading:<\/strong> Gila Monster shows noticeable dark shading. Where more ink collects, the color deepens while remaining connected to its burnt-orange and red-orange base. Those darker areas do not simply appear black.<\/p>\n

Sheen:<\/strong> The ink has a subtle black sheen<\/strong>. In our test, the dark effect was understated and most apparent in areas with heavier ink coverage. Its visibility may change with paper, ink concentration, and lighting.<\/p>\n

Shimmer:<\/strong> We did not observe shimmer. The visual interest here comes from the ink\u2019s color variation, shading, and restrained sheen.<\/p>\n

Feathering or Bleeding<\/h2>\n

During normal writing on Rhodia paper, we saw no feathering and no bleed-through<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The distinction matters because water did<\/em> make the ink spread and distort during the water test. Under ordinary dry writing conditions, however, our test lines stayed clean. More absorbent paper may produce different results.<\/p>\n
